Industrial/Organizational Psychology
JCââ¬â¢s Casino Improving Organization Retention Angela Harris PSY/435 March 12, 2013 Dr. M. Horton JCââ¬â¢s Casino Improving Organization Retention Running an effective company needs a management staff that has good communication skills and the ability to anticipate and satisfy the needs of the company as well as the employees. Companies spend time and money collecting information to assist organizations in their quest to do so. But, to have an effective enterprise, the employees incorporating higher administration should have organization as well.Companies hire impartial advisors to help them implement programs that will improve production, motivation, effective job hiring, and retention skills. Suggesting suitable modifications assists with job satisfaction and enhances worker output. For organizations like JCââ¬â¢s Casino a rigid strategy created through observation, staff and customer comments will assist the company to focus on undesirable behaviors from lower and uppe r management. Providing JCââ¬â¢s Casino with the information needed to keep excellent, effective dealers, and housekeepers while satisfying the needs of the clients.Improving Employment Recruitment and Retention JCââ¬â¢s casino is experiencing staff and guest complaints. Dealers and housekeepers during exit interviews have indicated a number of complaints regarding pit boss Joeââ¬â¢s behavior and management skills are having an adverse effect on the dealers and the guests. Because of Joeââ¬â¢s relationship to the owner, Tom the human resource director is afraid to voice the accusations thus, allowing the treating to continue. Housekeeping is also having issues because of absenteeism and retention. Because Andrew the director of housekeeping, is not able to solve this problem the casino has ad to change check out time and use employees from different departments to do extra work to cover any vacate positions. The goal to improve employment hiring and retention is achievab le. The method used in this case by an industrial organizational psychiatrist will assist to improve the organization's employee hiring and retention. The issues in higher management will reduce as soon as the matter with Joe is addressed. The usage of two motivation hypotheses will provide a starting point in fixing employee hiring and retention. The use of reinforcement and self-efficacy hypotheses is good tool for fixing the issues found at JCââ¬â¢s casino.Hiring of new employees appears to be an issue at the casino along with the ability to retain existing employees. Utilizing the reinforcement hypothesis will assist the organization in retaining existing workers by way of an incentive system and at the same time attract new employees. Even though JCââ¬â¢s casinoââ¬â¢s pay scale is similar to various other casinos, housekeeping director Keehn has problems with getting good reliable help since without new housekeepers the existing housekeepers are working longer hours to cater to the casinoââ¬â¢s requirements. The tension of additional work is very difficult for the workers and their determination to work for the organization has decreased. ââ¬Å"Using the self-efficacy hypothesis decides how peopleââ¬â¢s feelings regarding their own abilities may affect behavior; the inspiration to try the task refers to a personââ¬â¢s capabilities to accomplish the taskâ⬠(Spector, 2008). Existing workers are unsatisfied, the job description for housekeepers has modified considerably, giving housekeepers additional work. While the dealersââ¬â¢ keenness has been impacted by the pit boss that is described in the exit interviews as harmful, overbearing, bad, and inexperienced. The usage of self-efficacy and reinforcement ideas will improve worker recruitment and increase retention. But, additional inspirational theories in tandem would make the change better for the whole company. Alleviating on-the-job Stressors Tension on-the-job is normal in the o ffice, directing concentration toward the stressor assistance in looking for options for worker and client satisfaction.Occupational stressors influence worker satisfaction. ââ¬Å"Health issues take place from stress caused scenarios, bronchial asthma, migraines and cancerâ⬠(Hansell & Damour, 2007), enhancing employee absenteeism. Before recruitment applicants ask questions regarding the place of work environment and rewards. JCââ¬â¢s casinoââ¬â¢s popularity through exit interviews is less than positive. But, improving the negative thoughts and healing stressors is essential. Stressors recognized at the casino are the result of Joeââ¬â¢s mentality and attitude.Dealing with Joeââ¬â¢s behavior is necessary since he is the main reason for the majority of resignations and discontentment among the employees. Joeââ¬â¢s lack of awareness of the situation and his behavior is forcing good employees to leave the organization. The tension employeeââ¬â¢s face might be d ecreased substantially when Joe is approached and reprimanded for his actions. Additionally, stress taking place in housekeeping derives from working understaffed. To overcome being understaffed, and causing stress in other departments generating discontentment among the whole organization.JCââ¬â¢s casino can instantly improve negative opinions since the issues which require handling have been found. Getting individuals that fit the needs of the casino is an immediate need. Utilizing the Large 5 Personality dimension is a good tool to use. Understanding people assists in the hiring procedure and retention. Unfortunately, a few jobs don't satisfy individuals; a great way to use the Large 5 Personality dimension assists to group individuals who will work well collectively and with the general public. Additionally the Large 5 Personality dimension assists to forecast job efficiency (Spector, 2008).Improving Job Satisfaction Improving job satisfaction will increase worker retention a nd enhance job efficiency. JCââ¬â¢s casinoââ¬â¢s employees demonstrate discontentment due to management and additional jobs carried out not listed in the employeeââ¬â¢s job description. Job satisfaction is essential to keep an organization completely staffed and working successfully. Job reward methods will enhance job performance. Using the job reward system can enhance efficiency at the casino. Understanding what perks work best for the organization depends upon the workers and the placements held.Additionally bonus plans will work if the capabilities to enhance efficiency, workers wish the perks, and removing of physical or psychological restrictions. JCââ¬â¢s casino fulfills the requirements except for psychological restrictions. Joe that has been pointed out in a lot of exit interviews has created a mental stress on the workers due to his manners. Even though this is a problem Joeââ¬â¢s behavior is controllable with the good communication. JCââ¬â¢s casino fulf ills the specifications in compensation if compared to the rivals however worker satisfaction is related and overrides salaries.A good worker that is comfortable and satisfied with the job atmosphere assists to increase retention and enhance worker recruitment. Eliminating Counterproductive Behaviors Absenteeism on-the-job is continuing for JCââ¬â¢s casino. Hiring workers with these types of habits impacts the organization, similarly for existing workers. Attitudes and behaviors on job in some instances are infectious. ââ¬Å"Psychologically mature individuals are characterized by practical attitudeâ⬠(Feist & Feist, 2009). Jobs usually have excellent workers, however when the atmosphere is made up of call-outs and insufficient staffing reliable workers start to notice.JCââ¬â¢s casino uses staff from every division to fill in placements which needs to be covered by workers employed particularly for that placement. Until a proper staff level is met in housekeeping other de partments though temporary should assist. This will help reduce late check-out times and the need to employ someone to watch guestââ¬â¢s luggage. Unproductive employees should be given evaluations to be made aware of the impact their behavior is having on the rest of the organization and a chance to improve or be dismissed. The solution for the casino is to provide employee relations satisfaction.Though Joe is the step-son of the proprietor, it is attainable that if Joe is given managerial coaching needed to communicate with his employees in situations. And Tom management training related to coping with job related stressors and employee retentions the counter productivity will reduce. A good organization is only as good as the individuals who operate and run the company. Bad administration will cause an adverse effect on other employees, restricting job hiring and employee retention. Conclusion JCââ¬â¢s Casino has experienced retention problems regarding dealers and housekeep ers.The dealers have had to endure poor leadership and mistreatment by Joe the pit boss at the casino. The housekeeping division is working short staffed and has to depend on other departments to fill job responsibilities. The source of the issue at JCââ¬â¢s casino is bad management and employee interaction. A busy organization that is having problems with productivity and employee motivation will a high turn-over rate. Adjusting useful elements which cause counter productivity will motivate the workforce at JCââ¬â¢s casino to work like a team and to find the job as more than the usual paycheck.JCââ¬â¢s casino is salvageable; the organization is competitive with wages therefore money is not the problem. Focusing on the cause of the issue starts with management. Successfully running a busy organization is tough, however using the correct method through industrial and organizational psychology will create a foundation for the organization to grow while recruiting new employee s and retain the current employees. Australian education trends Essay
It is often known that education forms the backbone of economic development and growth in any nation. The investment in pre-school, primary and secondary education as well as community college education ensures availability of human capital endowed with relevant skills and knowledge for enhanced productivity. This has proven to be a necessity for sustained economic development in any country in the world. Educated people are in no doubt different from the uneducated or less educated in a variety ways (Tiffen, & Gittins, 2004). At the outset, the difference is eminent in attitudes and behavior, in their well being and health status, income as well as values regarding morals, religion, politics and employment among others. By instilling these positive characteristics to individuals in the community, education has therefore transformed the world people live in from the old ignorance-ridden era to the technologically-advanced modern life (Tiffen, & Gittins, 2004). Australia has experienced a steady increase in education levels in the last century. The government has in the past centralized funding of education and imposed high taxes on high income earners in an attempt to finance education. Students are not spared either in this plan and have been included in the ââ¬Å"user paysâ⬠principle where they reimburse for the education services received. However, this scheme has affected education in many countries and how the government plans to implement the principle together with high taxation is a matter of concern. In Australia, the Government provides public funding for non-government schools as well as substantial assistance to government academic institution. Funding of state government schools is the primary responsibility of States and territories (Laporte, & Ringold, 1997). These organs can also provide assistance to non-governmental institutions of learning. It is estimated that more than two thirds of the students in non-government academic institutions are affiliated to Catholic as a religion. Australian education system is a three tier model where children enroll in Kindergarten at the age of about five years, then graduate to primary followed by secondary levels from year one to twelfth year and finally tertiary education (Harrison, 2002). Education is mandatory for the children aged between five to about sixteen years but the federal government caters for the university education. This system has ensured a reduced school life expectancy thereby enhancing educational development in the country (Centre for Educational Research and Innovation, 2008). This however draws a sharp contrast to the old system. Australian education system was highly stratified and that only infants and primary education were provided for the children. Additionally, Selection for high school education was very competitive, and favored the siblings of specific people who used to be prominent in the society (Henry, 1990). These individuals included industrialists, agriculturalists as well as businessmen among other professionals. Teaching profession was undermined since the government offered low wages to the teachers in addition to subjecting them to strict laws that restricted their personal as well as professional conduct. These factors reduced the productivity of the teaching staff thereby suppressing studentsââ¬â¢ performance in schools (Henry, 1990). The tremendous increase in level of education in Australia has been largely attributed to changes in a variety of factors including social and institutional framework as well as economic changes and student financing much else besides (Evans & Kelley, 2002). To start with, changes in educational levels have been associated with urbanization. The rural-urban migration brought about by the inadequacy of farmland as well as search for skilled jobs in the cities has enhanced the development of cities in Australia. This has therefore called for the provision of educational services in these highly populated regions hence increasing the educational levels. Evans & Kelley (2002) estimates the changes brought about by urbanization to about six percent over the last century. Economic growth on the other hand has been articulated with the steady increase in the educational levels in Australia. This country has witnessed a considerable economic growth in the recent past. Australian GDP for instance is currently valued at 1050 billion dollars which is slightly above 1.6 percent of the world economy (Laporte, & Ringold, 1997). à Australia has so far recorded steady economic growth and unlike other OECD nations it did not fall to the economic recession witnessed in the recent past (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, 2007). Moreover, the country has recorded a growth rate of about 3.6% annually for the last fifteen years. This has empowered the government hence its ability to fund education as well as other sectors (UNESCO/OECD World Education Indicators Program, 2005). It therefore implies that most of the Australians are able to access education compared to the past where parents used to dropout of school after compulsory education level. The current parents have therefore acquired high social status in addition to pursuing the available high skilled and well-paying professional jobs. The Australian children who hail from well educated families can now access proper education thereby increasing the levels of education in the country (Ruitenberg, 2010). Economic growth has therefore contributed to about twenty six percent education growths in Australia. This change has mainly improved education levels in both the primary education which is compulsory as well as secondary education which the educated and socially as well as economically-empowered parents can now afford (Evans & Kelley, 2002).The duo however admit that the aforementioned factors only contribute to a little percentage of the sources of educational transformation so far witnessed in Australia and that the real sources of change in education trend in this century are still unclear. Youth participation in education including vocational education and training has also improved in Australia. According to Sue et al (2009) a variety of factors have influenced this upsurge in the education trends in Australia. Factors such as how the young peopleââ¬â¢s families as well as community value education, the socioeconomic status of the general population, available education and training and the school curriculum, existing policies on education and youth employment, financial incentives and obstacles, economic structure in regard to industry and occupation have changed hence improvement of youth participation in education and vocational training in Australia (Kilpatrick, Sue,à Baynes, Chapman & Hazel An indexing term that provides specific identifying information in a category: geographic names, laws and legislation, or tests and testing., ()), 2009). Australia just like other developed States has recorded a steady decline in fertility rate which has brought about the ratio of two children per couple (Tiffen, & Gittins, 2004). It is always presumed that the higher the number of children in a family the reduced ability of the parents to provide quality education to an individual child. This is because the available resources such as finance, energy and time are shared among the many children thereby reducing the amount received by an individual child (Evans & Kelley, 2002). The reduced fertility rate in Australia has ensured reduced number of children in a family which the parents can afford to provide quality education for thus contributing to increased level of education in the country. These changes in education levels brought about by changes in family size are only noticeable in secondary schools and tertiary levels and not in primary level where the government funds education (Harrison, 2002). The governmentââ¬â¢s commitment to provide quality education has also influenced to a greater extent the steady growth in education levels so far witnessed in Australia. The Australian government has increased its spending on education of both males and females compared to the last century. There have been issues of gender inequality in education and females have been stereotyped as underperformers in the past (Evans & Kelley, 2002). It is note worthy that in all countries except New Zealand; there have been lower performance by females than their male counterparts especially in mathematics literacy (Marginson, 1993). This traditional stereotype is being overcome by the Australian government through equal provision of educational services to both the sexes. Philosophers such as Martin Roland have also contributed to this issue of gender equality and education of the girl child. Roland argues that the old tradition was a barrier to the equal distribution of resources to both the sexes in the society since it discriminated against the females and favored the males. She reiterates that gender issues should be embedded in the curriculum as well as in teaching and schooling activities to ensure that the product of such a system is an ideal educated person. John Dewey is another renowned philosopher whose contribution to education, politics as well as philosophy has been globally recognized. According to Dewey, education was the cornerstone to intellectual development and progress of the society. He stressed on the improvement of moral and social nature of schools as an attempt to fostering democracy and community prosperity (Paringer, 1990). Dewey asserts that provision of education service to a single child in the society empowers the child towards self- effectiveness which consequently provides a guarantee to a lovely, worthy and harmonious society. Democracy never used to prevail in the ancient society as a result of lack of knowledge by then. According to Dewey, the nature of things should be viewed from a perspective of change and growth and therefore the continuous transformation in education is inevitable (Dewey, 2007). Nel Noddings is an additional prominent philosopher whose argument revolves around the moral reasoning, beliefs and values in education. She states that the current education trends encourages moral development hence the need to adopt educational structures that incorporates ethics and the use of motherly interest to inform moral learning. She however blames politics that fulfills the interests of particular groups for threatening the establishment of strong ethical foundation of learning as well as teaching in the academic institution (Palmer, Bresler, & Cooper, 2001). Conclusion Education in Australia has undergone commendable changes since the first half of the last century. The Australian government as well as other stakeholders in the educational sector has contributed towards the social progress which is primarily dependent on the enhanced education standards in the country. Education has so far transformed from the old system characterized by repugnant traditions and values to the modern technologically- advanced era where education is the basic requirement for community sustainability. The progress in science and technology in the current era has created the knowledge and skills necessary for the developed industrial economy, while growth of education has provided workforce that is needed to utilize these new opportunities. Australia currently enjoys a socially-friendly environment with high paying professional jobs as well as improved living standards courtesy of development witnessed in the education sector. Book Summary On Presentation Of Self
Book Summary On Presentation Of Self Introduction The presentation of oneself is based on the observation of an individual through comparing the life of him and the other people. Because of that inspiration of determining the revolutions that are found in the society, the roles and relationships that are found can affect the value of an individual and the idea on how he can describe himself from other people. Due to the intensive curiosity of an individual in life and his environment, there are studies that stress out the possible explanation on how to describe the changes in the earnest way. Various sociological models and approaches were presented to show the connection of the man in his environment. The interaction of the people in the social life is presented by the Erving Goffman in his dramaturgical model that attempts to see the society in a lighter sense. The Key Ideas Erving Goffman prepared the key ideas behind the discussion on the values wherein the ideas in theorizing the social roles and relations that ar e present in the contemporary society. According to the book of Goffman, the individual performs a certain role, which varies according to their audience. Those individuals as actors have an intention in manipulating the role that they play for the purpose of managing others impressions of them. Usually, this occurs through the interaction of the individuals in their everyday life. Since the society presents the interactions that usually matters with the human social relations or group of life, there is a natural involvement of disciplines that goes right with the study of sociology including the economics, political science, and psychology because they all fall within the topic of human society. Goffman, presented the theory that suggests that individuals engage in a significant amount of expressive manipulation along several fronts. Goffman likened his ideas to a theatre because ââ¬Å"individuals are, in essence, dramatic actors on a stage playing parts dictated by cultureâ⬠and this is the goal of such a presentation is acceptance from the audience through manipulation. If the actor succeeds, then they will be viewed as they desired by the audience. Goffman argues that the key to this success is to control which information the audience has access to (Goffman, 1959). Unlike the sociological theories wherein the individuals are linked with the disciplines early states, Goffmanââ¬â¢s dramaturgical model outlines the existence of the humanââ¬â¢s perspective on the stages where as an actor he usually plays. Giddens (2009) suggests that front regions are situations where individuals act out formal roles, essentially when they are ââ¬Ëon-stageââ¬â¢. Performances in front regions often require teamwork in order to be successful. Impression management also occurs in the front regions as the actor is trying to give the audience certain impressions of himself. Goffman suggests that ââ¬Å"when an individual appears before others, he will have many m otives for trying to control the situationâ⬠. In contrast, back regions (of the stage) are where individuals or performance teams prepare themselves for their roles. Goffman implies that it is where teams discuss and rehearse their performance before they enter the front stage. Props can also be used to aid an actor in their performance and they are assembled in the back region. These props assist an actor in convincing the audience that their performance is true. For example, a waitress in a restaurant would use a notepad and paper to take an order, to help convince her audience (customers) that her performance is true. Goffman indicated that the two regions are connected by a ââ¬Å"guarded passagewayâ⬠. This stops public performances being shattered by an inadvertent look from an audience member. If an individualââ¬â¢s performance is weak, the audience will see through it. ââ¬Å"The phenomenon of embarrassment is where the actor acts ineffectually or is unable to su stain their expected role. This leads to them being excluded from full participation in society, which demonstrates the importance of maintaining the appearance of being a competent social actor. The dramaturgical models value in theorizing social roles and relations in contemporary society is open to discussion. Goffmanââ¬â¢s ideas are praised for having had a ââ¬Å"profound influenceâ⬠on sociology as a discipline. On his book, it clearly states that Goffman uses the dramaturgical metaphor as his contribution in the field of sociology. He acknowledges the most stimulating and thought-provoking contributions to sociology which made the sociologists today refer to his work, especially for examples on how to carry out micro sociological work.

Forms of Business Organizations - Essay Example These characteristics of the sole proprietorship distinguish it from a corporation and a limited liability company. A sole proprietor, for example, owns and manages a sole proprietorship, a feature that is different from observations in corporations and limited liability companies. More than one person, for example, owns a corporation or a limited liability company. These owners are called shareholders while the owner of a sole proprietorship is called the sole proprietor. Board of directors who are distinct from the businessesââ¬â¢ owners manages corporations while limited liability companiesââ¬â¢ management is flexible. Another difference between the three forms of businesses is the ownersââ¬â¢ liability over the organizationsââ¬â¢ debts. While a sole proprietor is liable for all of the businessââ¬â¢ liabilities, corporations and limited liability companiesââ¬â¢ owners have limited liabilities that are restricted to their share contributions. Another difference be tween the forms of business organizations is the legal requirements to which they are subjected. While a sole proprietorship only requires the filing of the enterpriseââ¬â¢s name, corporation, and limited liability companies must be registered. The organizationsââ¬â¢ tax liabilities are also treated differently. While a sole proprietorship is taxed as a natural person through the proprietorââ¬â¢s income, a limited liability company is taxed at the business organizationââ¬â¢s level while a corporationââ¬â¢s taxation involves a double taxation in which the organizationââ¬â¢s earnings are taxed and shareholders are taxed on their dividends. The organizations also differ in their structural requirements.Ã

Discussion board reply - Assignment Example I believe that organizations should open the jobs for everyone by removing the restricting clause of age. This would promote equal opportunities for people from diverse background and help recruitment officers get the best applicant for the job. It is incorrect to say that target recruiting zeroes in on those select applicants most likely to possess the skill, knowledge and interest needed for the job openings because there are better and fairer ways to recruit applicants who fit best to the job (Bagley, Dalton * Ortegren, 2013). Online job application is one of the most effective ways of advertising the job and getting applications from applicants from diverse background who may fit the job specification. Moreover, online advertising also facilitates screening and calling for interviews only those candidates who fulfill job specifications. Target recruitment promotes discriminatory practices and therefore should be avoided by organizations. In the current times of rising unemployment, target recruitment deprives eligible candidates of the job opportunities. As such, it should not be encouraged and government should come up with stringent measures to dissuade the practice of target

Evolution in the Workplace Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Evolution in the Workplace - Essay Example Whether this survival is by natural selection, or by clinging onto Jesusââ¬â¢ teachings, we were still created to rise to the top. But not everyone rises to the top in the same way. Not only do we not rise in the same way, we are not always chosen for the role we want in life. Our behavior seems to dictate who we will hang out with at lunch time during our high school years. We are guided by our behavior which orders us to determine how we will communicate with our professors in order to receive a passing grade in college. Our children learn to sweat talk us with ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠behavior when they want to go to a party or want us to change our minds about something already predetermined. Our behavior runs the show. The question isnââ¬â¢t whether we are good at convincing one another or choosing the right group of friends to associate ourselves with. The question is how hardwired is human behavior? (Nicholson, 1998, p. 135) Is it in our genes? Is it in our blood? Did God make us a certain way? Did evolution split us in a particular direction? So many questions with such a diverse amount of answers leads some to believe that it is through natural selection that we are able to stand on our own two feet and be successful in life, and in our workplace. But others, still, believe that from day one, we were made to be a certain way. This could be through creation or evolution. Evolution is not the belief that there is no intelligent design. It is the belief that things change and adapt from its particular origin. The origin can be different for each species and not even Charles Darwin claimed to know what the origin was. (Wright, 1994, pp. 1-10) He only claims that things evolve from one point to another. Evolution however, is not just one step and the theory is not as narrow as it may seem. The theory includes six different components which create the theory of evolution in its entirety. The six components are evolution, gradualism, speciation, common ancest ry, natural selection, and nonselective mechanism of evolutionary change. (Coyne, 2009, p. 3) Each of these parts means something important and are directly applied to determining which person is best fit for the job at hand. Evolution itself means that a particular species undergoes genetic change over time. Is this something that occurs in the workplace? Yes! Overtime, people learn how to please their ââ¬Å"bossâ⬠or they are not rehired. For the manager, they learn to look for traits that is going to help grow their business, not shrink it. This is where the idea of modern Darwinism comes in. The new fields of science or psychology do not just come about. They evolve, and with its evolution come the ability to choose in a more purposeful way. Choosing who will work for you is so important because you do not want to be stuck with the thought that you will need to ââ¬Å"fireâ⬠that person. Gradualism is the idea that it takes many years to produce the product of evoluti on. (Coyne, 2009, p. 4) In the workplace this means two things. The manager or the boss needs to have several bad apples before realizing what he really wants, and, improvement in the workforce comes over time. Competition adds to the search for the new and better improved resources that will help a company grow, and not extinguish itself. Part of this gradualism is allowing time for change. If the boss does not allow time for change, he or she will either not see change, or the change will
